Marcala Town is located in the southwest of Honduras at 3 hours from Tegucigalpa, the capitol city. With many transportation communicating with all the country including El Salvador.
Marcala, comes from the mexican word "Malcalli", which means land of jails and carnations garden. "Jailed" by hills, the 10,000 people's town was founded by a nomade group. The Chinacla tribe came down to the place named Capiro around the XVII century running away from a plague. A century later, another group who lived in a near mountain, the Ingurulas, got up in the manner of war. The Ingurulas, who had the biggest number of people, gave them a great defeat and the Chinaclas returned to their ancient place. There, they hid their belongings at caves. Now, at this time, we're still finding vestigies of great value. Winners stablished in a village now called Pueblo Viejo (Old Town), 1 Km and half from the town, and we know that, because there are ruins of an ancient church. These ruins are in a coffee farmstead.

| Maria Concepción Ventura, retired elementary school teacher is the owner of a coffee plantation,she has had many problems in order to carry-out the coffee to the cooperative. Around fifty years ago, there wasn't any road, so the workers had to load the bags on their backs the bags to the farmstead's side and bring it on mules to Marcala. Now, with cooperations of coffee institutions, there is a road, but the workers still take on themselves the bags. And not only in the farmstead's teacher, it's the same for every coffee worker. Teacher Ventura's had many entire families living in little houses inside her farmstead, but they just live there for a while because, althoug this job is between november to march, they can earn up to L.2,000 ($100) per week working all the family. This money, some year later, is enough for build their own house. Many of this workers are worry for give education to their kids. They graduate as teachers, coffee technician and public accountants in order to give to their families a better life. | ![]() |
